I haven’t been back to the dentist for a couple of years, which my dentist is “kind” enough to remind me of every so often. I confided in a friend that I am a little afraid of going back because it always hurts so much. She told me about sedation dentistry and said it was the best thing she ever did. But, when I spoke to my dentist about it, he said it wasn’t a legitimate reason to use sedation. Can you tell me what are legitimate reasons? My friend seemed to think I could have it.

Anita,
I would consider your reason, dental anxiety, a legitimate reason. Obviously, your dentist has a different feeling. That doesn’t mean you can’t get sedation. It just means you’ll have to go to a different dentist. To be frank, I’m not sure this is the best dentist for you anyway. You want someone who is compassionate with those who have dental fear, whether mild or severe.
I suggest you find another local dentist. Explain what you’re issue is and see what services he offers. Many dentists who like helpling fearful patients, will put what sedation services they offer on their website. That will save you having to make a ton of calls.
Just let me say I’m sorry for your experiences and know that dentists are not all the same.
