I have TMJ Disorder and have found my teeth whitening system aggravates it. I recently read about the Tanda Pearl Ionic Teeth Whitening System. It says you can whiten your teeth in just five minutes a day. I am thinking that it would help with the pain from my TMJ. Do you know much about this system, specifically if it works?

Dear Stacey,
I am very glad you wrote. It does use a valid whitening ingredient. That is a positive. It will be weaker than what you get with your dentist, but will whiten. I have some precautions you need to be aware of, though.
There is nothing groundbreaking about this. Their mysterious ionic technology appears to be trying to mimic what the Zoom Whitening light will do. Unfortunately, I don’t think the Tanda Pearl does much, especially since they are unwilling to divulge any information about it. While they declare low sensitivity from the light, I feel like the low sensitivity is mostly because of the limited time period wearing the gel.
The Tanda Pearl tray is my biggest concern for you. Your dentist should have made you custom fit whitening trays, one for each arch of your teeth. The tray from Tanda Pearl is only one tray that you have to bite down on to keep in your mouth. Even at just five minutes, it will aggravate your TMJ Disorder even more than you are likely feeling now.
My suggestion is to just cut down on the amount of time you are wearing your custom trays. The only thing that will do is make the final result take a little longer. But, it would take a lot longer with the Tanda Pearl for a couple of reasons.
First, the gel will not be professional strength teeth whitening gel. Second, because the trays are not custom fit, your saliva will get in, which dilutes the gel further. It also allows your gel to leak out, which not only means less whitening, but it can also put you at risk of sensitivity to your gums.
