My sister got Lumineers. Although they are an improvement on her teeth, I think she looks mildly like a beaver. The teeth are bulky and seem a little too long. Is this common? I had always heard that smile makeovers could make you look like a celebrity.

Elsie,
You’re right, smile makeovers should give you a gorgeous smile. Your complaint is a common one with Lumineers. They are advertised as easy to place and no-prep. That often draws the attention of inexperienced Lumineers. Unfortunately, they can be bulky and a little opaque.
What people need to realize is that the most important part of getting a smile makeover with porcelain veneers (no matter what the brand), is what dentist you choose. You want a highly experienced cosmetic dentist. One with significant post-graduate training. You also want them to have an artistic eye, becuase getting a great smile is as much an art as it is technique.
The best cosmetic dentists are accredited by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. There is a difference between membership and accreditation, so don’t confuse the two. Any dentist can become a member. You have to pass stringent exams, including demonstrating your artistry.
That is the type of dentist that can give your sister a gorgeous smile with porcelain veneers.
